The 1843 Chart · The Midnight Cry · The 1850 Chart · The Sanctuary · The Loud Cry
This page gathers the old paths, the waymarks and high heaps, and the foundation truths carried through the Advent movement—from the early chart, to the Midnight Cry, to the sanctuary opened, to the sealing message, to the Loud Cry still swelling.
The call is to search, compare, remember, and not let the light behind go out. The issue is not novelty. The issue is whether souls will cling to the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
“Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables (Habbukuk 2:2-3), that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time... though it tarry, wait for it...”
— Habakkuk 2:2–3 (KJV)The path is not hidden. The landmarks were set. The question is whether they will be remembered.
Some truths are pillar truths. Some are waymarks along the path. Together they form a connected testimony: the chart made plain, the cry at midnight, the disappointment, the sanctuary opened, the commandments of God, the faith of Jesus, the health message as the arm to the body, reform in life and dress, and the final Loud Cry calling souls out.
The early chart was made plain upon tables for a running people. It belongs to the first and second angels’ messages, the proclamation of judgment, and the movement that led to the great Advent expectation.
Habakkuk 2:2–3 · Revelation 14:6–8Learn More“Behold, the bridegroom cometh.” The cry at midnight joined the second angel’s message in 1844 and gave power to the call to come out. It became a bright light set up behind the Advent people.
Matthew 25:6 · Early vision of the straight and narrow pathLearn MoreAfter the disappointment, the light did not die. The 1850 chart carried forward The Present Truth: sanctuary light, commandments of God, faith of Jesus, and the onward path of the remnant.
Revelation 14:12 · Revelation 11:19Learn MoreAt the close of the 2300 days, the heavenly sanctuary entered the foreground. The temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen the ark of His testament.
Daniel 8:14 · Revelation 11:19 · Hebrews 8–9Learn MoreThe knowledge of the Father and the Son is life eternal. The personality of God and of Christ is not a trifle but one of the pillars to be guarded from confusion and uncertainty.
John 17:3 · John 20:17Learn MoreThe plant-based diet and health reform belong with the message like the arm to the body. They support the work; they do not replace it.
Genesis 1:29 · Isaiah 66:15–17Learn MoreDress is not the whole religion, yet reform in dress was linked with modesty, health, simplicity, and distinction from the world. The issue is Christian plainness, not vanity.
1 Timothy 2:9–10 · 1 Peter 3:3–4Learn MoreAnother angel (Rev. 18:1-5) joins the Third Angel's message (Rev. 14:9-12) work, as the Midnight Cry (Matt. 25:6) joined the Second Angel's Message (Rev. 14:8) in 1843-1844. The Second Angel’s message is repeated with the added mention of corruptions that have been entering the churches since 1844, swelling the 3rd Angel's message into a loud cry to not backslide into the Romish Papal errors and false doctrines that the 1st and 2nd Angel's message brought God's peculiar people out of in 1843-1844.
Revelation 18:1–5 · Revelation 14:9–12Learn MoreWrite the vision. Make it plain upon tables (Habbukuk 2:2-3). Let the runner see the path.
The charts are not museum relics. They are witnesses to the movement, to the tarrying time (Habbukuk 2:2-3), and to the order in which truth opened. They frame the Midnight Cry, the great disappointment on October 22, 1844 (also the start of the 3rd angel's message), and the sanctuary light in the Most Holy Place in the Heavenly Sanctuary that followed.
Habakkuk 2:2–3 (KJV) "And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry."

Used in the Advent awakening, this chart belongs to the period of the first and second angels’ messages and the movement proclaiming the near approach of the judgment.

Carried forward after 1844, this chart stands with the sanctuary message, the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus as The Present Truth for the waiting saints.
“The passing of the time in 1844 was a period of great events, opening to our astonished eyes the cleansing of the sanctuary transpiring in heaven, and having decided relation to God's people upon the earth, [also] the first and second angels' messages and the third, unfurling the banner on which was inscribed, ‘The commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.’ One of the landmarks under this message was the temple of God, seen by His truth-loving people in heaven, and the ark containing the law of God.”
— Ellen G. White, Counsels to Writers and Editors, 30.2 (1904 compilation of earlier statement)The cry came. The Bridegroom tarried. The path remained.
“And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.”
— Matthew 25:6 (KJV)James White tied the second angel directly to the 1844 call out of the churches:
“The first message was to the churches, from about 1840 to 1843; and the second angel ‘followed,’ therefore the message—‘Babylon is fallen’—‘Come out of her my people’ was in 1844. We heard it with our ears, our voices proclaimed it, and our whole being felt its power, and with our eyes we saw its effect, and the oppressed people of God burst the bands that bound them to the various sects, and made their escape from Babylon.”
— James White, The Third Angel’s Message (1850)He then placed the third angel after the close of the second, in the disappointment period and onward:
“The second angel’s message reached to the fall of 1844, where the cry—‘Come out of her my people’ closed: then the time for the third came.... We know then that the time for this third message is now.... The second angel’s message called us out from the fallen churches where we are now free to think, and act for ourselves in the fear of God.”
— James White, The Third Angel’s Message (1850)The Midnight Cry (Matthew 25:6) joined the second angel’s message (Revelation 14:8) and separated a people from the churches that rejected the warning in 1843 and 1844.
The expected event was misunderstood, but the time itself held. The tarrying time opened into a deeper work.
Some denied the light behind them and went into darkness (April 15, 1904). Others kept their eyes on Jesus and walked forward in The Present Truth.
“At this I raised my eyes and saw a straight and narrow path, cast up high above the world. On this path the Advent people were traveling to the city, which was at the further end of the path. They had a bright light set up behind them at the first end of the path, which an angel told me was the Midnight Cry. This shone all along the path, and gave light for their feet that they might not stumble.... Others rashly denied the light behind them, and said that it was not God that had led them out so far. The light behind them went out, leaving their feet in perfect darkness, and they stumbled and got their eyes off the mark, and lost sight of Jesus, and fell off the path down into the dark and wicked world below.”
— Ellen G. White, Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2, 30.2 (1860)The disappointment did not end the message. It opened the Most Holy Place in the Heavenly Sanctuary (Psalm 77:13).
“Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.”
— Daniel 8:14 (KJV)“And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament.”
— Revelation 11:19 (KJV)In James White’s framing, after the second angel closed in the fall of 1844, the third angel stood where the waiting saints were brought to the commandments of God and to the heavenly temple. This joined the sanctuary to the Sabbath and the sealing work.
“The second angel’s message called the second advent host from the various sects, and formed the Philadelphia church, or church of Brotherly Love, in the fall of 1844. To this church it is said—‘Behold, I have set before thee an open door.’ This doubtless refers to the tabernacle of the testimony which was then opened, that the light of the holy law of God might shine out upon the waiting saints.”
— James White, The Third Angel’s Message (1850)Life eternal is to know the Father and the Son.
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
— John 17:3 (KJV)“The seventeenth chapter of John speaks plainly regarding the personality of God and of Christ and of their relation to each other. ‘Father, the hour is come,’ Christ said; ‘glorify Thy Son, that Thy Son also may glorify Thee; as Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as Thou hast given Him. And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.’”
— Ellen G. White, Ms 124, 1903“Those who seek to remove the old landmarks are not holding fast; they are not remembering how they have received and heard. Those who try to bring in theories that would remove the pillars of our faith concerning the sanctuary, or concerning the personality of God or of Christ, are working as blind men. They are seeking to bring in uncertainties and to set the people of God adrift, without an anchor.”
— Ellen G. White, Ms 62, 1905; also MR760 9.5The arm belongs to the body, but the arm must not become the body.
“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed... and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
— Genesis 1:29 (KJV)“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)“The health reform is as closely related to the third angel’s message as the arm to the body; but the arm cannot take the place of the body. The proclamation of the third angel’s message, the commandments of God, and the testimony of Jesus, is the burden of our work. The message is to be proclaimed with a loud cry, and is to go to the whole world. The presentation of health principles must be united with this message, but must not be independent of it, or in any way take the place of it.”
— Ellen G. White, Lt 57, 1896; also 16MR 332.1The health message belongs in this page because restoration is whole restoration—mind, appetite, habit, home, and witness. But the burden of the work remains the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus.
Not the whole religion, yet not beneath notice either.
“God would now have His people adopt the reform dress, not only to distinguish them from the world as His ‘peculiar people,’ but because a reform in dress is essential to physical and mental health. God’s people have, to a great extent, lost their peculiarity, and have been gradually patterning after the world, and mingling with them, until they have in many respects become like them. This is displeasing to God.”
— Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, 525 (1867)“There is no need to make the dress question the main point of your religion. There is something richer to speak of. Talk of Christ, and when the heart is converted everything that is out of harmony with the Word of God will drop off.”
— Ellen G. White, Evangelism, 272 (1889)As the Midnight Cry joined the second angel in 1844, so the angel of Revelation 18 joins again.
“The light which attended this angel penetrated everywhere, as he cried mightily, with a strong voice, ‘Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.’ The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by the second angel, is repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes in at the right time to join in the last great work of the third angel’s message as it swells to a loud cry. And the people of God are thus prepared to stand in the hour of temptation, which they are soon to meet.”
— Ellen G. White, Early Writings, 277.1 (from Spiritual Gifts, vol. 1, 1858)“Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard voices which seemed to sound everywhere, ‘Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues; for her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.’ This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, joining it as the midnight cry joined the second angel’s message in 1844. The glory of God rested upon the patient, waiting saints, and they fearlessly gave the last solemn warning, proclaiming the fall of Babylon and calling upon God’s people to come out of her that they might escape her fearful doom.”
— Ellen G. White, Early Writings, 277.2 (from Spiritual Gifts, vol. 1, 1858)“When the messages of the three angels come prominently before the world again just before the second advent of Christ, the angel of Revelation 18:1 joins in the proclamation of the second angel in the message that ‘Babylon is fallen.’ ‘Come out of her, my people.’”
— Ellen G. White, Early Writings, Appendix, 304.1 (1882 edition note)This is why the page must keep the connection clear: the Loud Cry is not detached from the earlier movement. It repeats the second angel with added light, while joining the third angel as that message swells with final power.
The testimony of Jesus — the Spirit of Prophecy — restored among the remnant.
"The woman is a symbol of the church... the remnant... keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ... The gifts planted in the Christian church by Jesus Christ..."
— Spiritual Gifts, vol. 3, p. 26"Pentecost brought them the heavenly illumination... With a faith and assurance... they told their experience to the world..."
— Acts of the Apostles, p. 45The final remnant are not a powerless people. The same Spirit, the same gifts, the same power is restored. The testimony of Jesus is not a relic — it is living, active, and preparing a people for translation.
The same pattern — repeated with greater power.
"This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, and joined it, as the midnight cry joined the second angel's message in 1844."
— Spiritual Gifts, vol. 1, p. 193"The message of the fall of Babylon... is repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844."
— Early Writings, p. 277As the Midnight Cry awakened the sleeping virgins before 1844, so the Loud Cry now awakens those who have fallen back into confusion. The message is not new — it is a repetition, with greater light and greater urgency.
The Advent movement divided — and remains divided.
"Behind them... was a bright light... the midnight cry... Some denied the light behind them... and it went out..."
— Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2, p. 30Since October 22, 1844, two classes have developed: the wise who hold fast the light of the pioneers, and the foolish who reject the light and fall back into darkness.
"A new organization would be established... Books of a new order would be written... Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement."
— 1SM 204Every soul must choose: remain with the foundation laid from 1841–1850, or follow a system that has departed from the pillars of truth.
The issue is whether the light behind will be confessed or denied.
“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.”
— Jeremiah 6:16 (KJV)“Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the highway, even the way which thou wentest.”
— Jeremiah 31:21 (KJV)
